With its variety of colors, the tourmaline is arguably one of the most exciting minerals of all. Not only can it take on virtually any shade, but the fact that crystals often display multiple colors in a wide range of combinations makes it a versatile and popular collector's mineral. For instance, there are tourmalines with a unique red-green color combination. Clear crystals are also frequently cut. Bi- or multi-colored gemstones are particularly sought after and, when of high quality, fetch top prices on the gem market. The best-known deposits are in Madagascar, Afghanistan, Tanzania, Brazil, and the USA.
