The Island of Gems
Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka, the enchanting island in the Indian Ocean, is characterized by its diverse geography. From the majestic central mountains to the palm-fringed coastlines, Sri Lanka offers an impressive variety of landscapes. In terms of minerals, the country is known for its rich deposits of gemstones such as Sapphires, Chrysoberyls and Rubies, which has earned it the nickname "The Island of Gems".
The heart of gemstone production
Ratnapura
is located in the southwest of Sri Lanka and means "City of Gemstones". The surrounding areas, such as the Ratnapura district, are rich in mineral deposits, particularly Sapphires, Rubies, Spinels and, more rarely, Chrysoberyls and Taaffeites. Here, traditional mining has been practiced for generations, although it also presents challenges.
