Quartz (SiO2) is one of the most common minerals on Earth, but with its incredibly many varieties, it is also the most versatile. It occurs in almost every conceivable color. Iron impurities in the crystal lattice in conjunction with natural radioactive radiation are responsible for the violet coloration (amethyst) and yellow coloration (citrine), while aluminum ions and ionizing radiation caused the gray coloration of smoky quartz. Artificial citrine can be produced by heating amethyst to over 350 °C. Mixed crystals of amethyst and citrine are also called ametrine. Trigonal crystal system, hardness: 7 (Mohs).
