Rutile belongs to the oxides (titanium dioxide). The tetragonal crystals are usually red, which is often not immediately apparent due to their metallic luster. With a hardness of 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale, rutile is one of the harder minerals. The mineral is common, but large crystals, especially those on matrix, are quite rare and therefore highly sought after by collectors.
