Rubies are red varieties of corundum (chemically aluminum oxide (Al2O3)). The red color is caused by small amounts of chromium ions. Rubies crystallize in the trigonal crystal system, have a Mohs hardness of 9 and glow intensely red under UV light.
Rubies are found worldwide, with some of the most important locations being in Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Tanzania.
