Spinel is an oxide that is primarily known as blood-red octahedra, but pink, violet, blue and even green crystals also occur. Twin formation (according to the so-called “spinel law”) is common. Due to its very suitable gemstone properties, spinel is also often polished and used as a gemstone. Facetable crystals are mainly found in alluvial deposits; the main areas of discovery are in Southeast Asia and East Africa.
