Sapphire, a variety of corundum, includes colorless and variegated variations, excluding rubies. The term usually refers to the blue variants with varying shades. Sapphires crystallize in the trigonal system as double-pointed, barrel-shaped six-sided crystals with Al2O3 composition. The main producers were Sri Lanka and India. The USA (Montana), Australia and Nigeria have recently been added. Madagascar supplies high quality sapphires, often sold as coming from Sri Lanka. Production in Australia has now fallen sharply again.
