Sphene / Titanite with Diopside

In Tanzania, sphene or titanite is usually yellow-brown to greenish in color, but sometimes occurs in hand-sized crystals. The calcium titanium silicate crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system and twinning is quite common. Sphene has only a medium hardness (Mohs: 5-5.5).

Mererani is a fascinating and exceptionally diverse deposit in northeast Tanzania at the foot of Kilimanjaro. The deposit first gained international attention in the 1970s with the discovery of gem-quality zoisite (tanzanite), but further discoveries were to follow: for decades it has provided the world's best crystals for a wide variety of other minerals, such as tsavorite (chrome-vanadium grossular), diopside, magnesioaxinite, tremolite, graphite, alabandine, wurtzite, etc. The approximately 16 square kilometer area is protected by a four-meter-high video-monitored wall and is guarded by armed guards around the clock; it is virtually impossible for foreigners and locals to gain access.
