Good to excellent rutile crystals were found this year in the tanzanite mines near Mererani. We were able to secure the entire find. Due to the thin crystal, this rutile has only a slight silver luster; however, the reddish-brown color of the crystal is very clearly visible.

Rutile belongs to the oxide mineral group and is chemically titanium dioxide (TiO2). It crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system and has a hardness of slightly more than six on the Mohs scale. The crystals are brown, reddish-brown, or beige in color and usually have a silvery luster.
