Apatite is a mineralogical term for a variety of minerals. The most common is fluorapatite, a fluorine-containing calcium phosphate that forms opaque to clear, hexagonal crystals in various colors (colorless, yellow, pink, green, violet, blue, brown). It has a medium hardness (Mohs = 5) and, depending on the color, a clear pleochroism.
