Magara mine, Lake Manyara, Arusha Region, Tanzania
The alexandrites from Lake Manyara usually show a slight color change: in daylight they are green-blue, while in candlelight they show a slight purple shimmer, especially at fracture points. In long-wave UV light, however, they glow red. This alexandrite, which is of excellent quality for the locality, is an almost complete cyclic twin with elongated side surfaces and is therefore comparatively large.

Alexandrite is the color-changing variety of the already rare chrysoberyl. This extraordinary phenomenon, the alexandrite effect named after it, causes the stone to sparkle in a blue to green color in daylight, but in a deep red color in artificial light. This and generally its excellent properties make it a very sought-after and valuable gemstone in good quality. Chrysoberyl often produces excellent twins, a specialty being the cyclic rotation triplets. The best-known deposits are in Russia, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.
