The alexandrites from Lake Manyara usually show a slight color change: in daylight they are green-blue, while in candlelight they show a slight purple shimmer, especially at fracture points. In long-wave UV light, however, they glow red. Here is a single crystal with one larger and several smaller crystal faces; some with a beautiful satin gloss.

Alexandrite is the color-changing variety of the already rare chrysoberyl. This extraordinary phenomenon, the alexandrite effect named after it, causes the stone to sparkle in a blue to green color in daylight, but in a deep red color in artificial light. This and generally its excellent properties make it a very sought-after and valuable gemstone in good quality. Chrysoberyl often produces excellent twins, a specialty being the cyclic rotation triplets. The best-known deposits are in Russia, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.
