Mererani, Merelani Hills, Lelatema Mountains, Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, Tanzania
This special specimen combines five typical minerals from the Merelani Hills mines: In addition to pyrite, there is tanzanite (broken off), diopside and blue apatite on a dark graphite matrix.
4.2 x 4.0 x 3.0 cm
42.7 g

Pyrite crystallizes in the cubic crystal system and forms very versatile crystal shapes (e.g. cube, octahedron, pentagon dodecahedron, mixed shapes). Chemically it is iron sulfide (FeS), is also known as fool's gold and can actually contain gold in very small amounts. However, this is not the cause of the attractive yellow metallic shine.
