Demantoid

Demantoid belongs to the Garnet Supergroup, more precisely to Andradite, and is therefore an iron/calcium silicate with a cubic crystal structure. The mostly pale green crystals have a medium hardness (Mohs 6-7.5).

The Demantoid deposit near Antetezambato in northwest Madagascar has been exhausted for several years. The Garnet specimens were mined in a mangrove area. The Demantoids were formed in cavities in a skarn rock, which was formed by transformation processes when volcanic fluids penetrated porous sandstone.
