The trigonal crystallizing Rhodochrosite is chemically manganese carbonate (MNCO3). The strong red crystals from South Africa or the USA in particular make collectors' hearts beat faster. The red color is created when a little iron is present. Other colors are pink, orange, yellow or white. Very beautiful specimens also come from Peru, Gabon or Germany. Since most of the deposits have been exhausted, the prices for this mineral have been rising steadily in recent years. Rhodochrosite also occurs in columnar, stalactite, coarse granular or crusty forms. It is less hard (Mohs = 3.5-4) and sensitive to acid.
