Magara mine, Lake Manyara, Arusha Region, Tanzania
On our last trip, despite several inquiries and research, we only received a single small lot of the material from Magara. This Alexandrite has crystal faces (fragment of a triplet), but a weak color change. Bright red under UV light.

Alexandrite is the color-changing variety of the already rare Chrysoberyl. This extraordinary phenomenon, the Alexandrite effect named after it, causes the stone to sparkle in a blue to green color in daylight, but in a deep red color in artificial light. This and generally its excellent properties make it a very sought-after and valuable gemstone in good quality. Chrysoberyl often produces excellent twins, a specialty being the cyclic rotation triplets. The best-known deposits are in Russia, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.
