On our last trip, despite several inquiries and research, we only received a single small lot of the material from Magara. Small Alexandrite fragment with one crystal surface and clearly visible color change (reddish in warm light). Fiery red under UV long.

Alexandrite is the color-changing variety of the already rare Chrysoberyl. This extraordinary phenomenon, the Alexandrite effect named after it, causes the stone to sparkle in a blue to green color in daylight, but in a deep red color in artificial light. This and generally its excellent properties make it a very sought-after and valuable gemstone in good quality. Chrysoberyl often produces excellent twins, a specialty being the cyclic rotation triplets. The best-known deposits are in Russia, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.
