Magara mine, Lake Manyara, Arusha Region, Tanzania
On our last trip, despite several inquiries and research, we only received a single small lot of the material from Magara. A complete rotational trilling, but quite dark, so that a color change is hardly noticeable. Glows red under UV long. The pleochroism in polarized transmitted light is remarkable (alternating color change of the individual zones). Broken off on the underside.

Alexandrite is the color-changing variety of the already rare Chrysoberyl. This extraordinary phenomenon, the Alexandrite effect named after it, causes the stone to sparkle in a blue to green color in daylight, but in a deep red color in artificial light. This and generally its excellent properties make it a very sought-after and valuable gemstone in good quality. Chrysoberyl often produces excellent twins, a specialty being the cyclic rotation triplets. The best-known deposits are in Russia, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.
